Classic Motorcycle Valves & Guides

Valves and guides are the parts most often put back when they should have been replaced. A guide worn oval will draw oil past a new valve inside a few hundred miles, and a seat recut to clean up a pitted valve changes the installed height of the spring behind it. Doing the head once costs less than doing it twice.

We list inlet and exhaust valves, guides and valve spring sets for the British, Czech and Italian machines in our catalogue, singly and as matched sets. Side-valve engines are covered here alongside the overhead valve ones.

Buying for your head

Inlet and exhaust valves are rarely the same part, and on many engines the guides differ between the two ports as well. Phosphor bronze and cast iron guides behave differently once the engine is hot, so if the head has been apart before, check what is actually in it rather than what the parts book says should be there. Side-valve heads and overhead valve heads are a separate question again: the valves may look similar in a photograph, but stem length and seat angle are not shared.

What this category covers

  • Valves — inlet and exhaust, for overhead valve and side-valve engines
  • Guides — supplied on their own or together with the matching valve
  • Springs — valve spring sets
  • Head sets — valve and guide kits covering one cylinder head in one order

Not sure what came out?

Measure the stem diameter and the overall length of the old valve and send those with the engine number. That is usually enough for us to identify it, and it avoids fitting something that is close rather than correct.

If you are doing the whole head, order the valves, guides and springs together. They wear as a set and they are cheaper to fit as one job.
